Shalom Theatre of SLC Update

Dear friends and family of Shalom Theatre Company of Salt Lake City --

We were so happy with our first project, a staged reading of the play SEARCHING FOR DAVID'S HEART. We'd like to thank each and every person who participated in it, and each and every person who came to see it. It was only the beginning.

Some of you may know that our next project/production was supposed to take place at this time. Due to some health issues and surgeries over the summer, I'm still in healing mode, which is why the dates have been pushed to this spring.

Our next project will be a ten minute playwriting contest for middle and high school students. The play must be inspired by one of the ten commandments. Feel free to let your imagination go wild. The play cannot have more than 4 characters and it cannot run more than ten minutes. There will be a number of runners-up, whose plays will receive a staged reading. The winning play will receive a full production, with full production values, plus a cash prize. These plays will make up a full evening of theatre. Note that middle school students will be competing against middle school students and high school students will compete against high school students.

If you are interested in seeing how some very successful playwrights handled this assignment, see 10x10 -- TEN PLAYS ON THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, edited by Jeff Gottesfeld. It's published by Dramatic Publishers. You can get information about this at my website: CHERIEBENNETT.COM. We will need lots of teens and lots of adults to get involved (actors, directors, stage managers, etc.) to make what I think will be an amazing evening of theatre a success.

So...more news to come. But teens...feel free to start writing! Teens should submit TWO COPIES OF EACH PLAY IN HARD COPY FORM, NOT ELECTRONICALLY. THEY SHOULD MAIL THEIR PLAY TO:

SHALOM THEATRE COMPANY OF SLC
CHERIE BENNETT, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
655 H STREET
SALT LAKE CITY, UT 84103

Plays MUST be typed. Check online for the proper way to set play dialogue and stage directions on paper. When you submit, have your name appear ONLY ON THE COVER SHEET, which should include your name, age, grade, address, phone number and email. YOUR NAME SHOULD NOT APPEAR ANY PLACE ON THE PLAY ITSELF AS ALL JUDGING WILL BE DONE BLIND. In other words, the judges will not know who is the author of the play. You may enter up to three plays. Also, while we will start accepting admissions immediately, the cut-off date for submission will be February, 2010, specific date to come.

If you have questions, email us at shalomtheatreslc@yahoo.com and someone will get back to you as soon as possible. Also, feel free to check out our page and become a fan on Facebook.

As always, the Shalom Theatre Company of SLC welcomes the involvement of teens and adults of every and any faith.

More soon!

Best,
Cherie Bennett

A Little Bit About Cherie Bennett

CHERIE BENNETT
Artistic Director

of the Shalom Theatre Company of Salt Lake City

Cherie, along with her husband and frequent writing partner Jeff Gottesfeld, just finished a two-year stint as Associate Head Writers of The Young and the Restless (CBS), the number one daytime drama for the last two decades. Before they joined Y&R, they wrote the Paramount/MTV Films Broken Bridges. In primetime, they were responsible for the underlying material for the CW’s Privileged, having penned the novel on which it was based, How to Teach Filthy Rich Girls. Also the author of a New York Times best selling series about teens that is wildly popular, written by her and her husband under a sudo name. Other TV credits include Smallville, the pilots for Televest Productions’ Girls Got Game, 19 Entertainment’s Philly, and story consultants for several other daytime dramas.
Cherie’s award winning novels (ALA Best Book, Children’s Choice Award, Best Books for Reluctant Readers, many state Best Books lists, many reading lists for middle schools and high schools, etc.) include: Anne Frank & Me, Life in the Fat Lane, A Heart Divided, Zink, and Searching for David’s Heart.
As a playwright, Cherie is a two-time winner of the Kennedy Center’s New Visions/New Voices competition for new plays for young people or teens (Searching for David’s Heart, Cyra and Rocky). Her play Anne Frank & Me, which ran Off-Broadway to rave reviews in the New York Times, is one of the most produced plays for young people in the country. Many of her plays have been developed and produced by Youth Theater at the University of Utah. Her most recent play, Reviving Ophelia (based on Dr. Mary Pipher’s seminal book), was work-shopped at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, and then received its world premiere at The University of Utah. Her plays are published by Dramatics Publishing. Cherie and her family live in Salt Lake City, Utah.

INTRODUCING...

OUR FIRST TWO PROJECTS:

Spring’09: A rehearsed, reader’s theater version of Cherie Bennett’s play SEARCHING FOR DAVID’S HEART. This play was the winner of New Visions/New Voices at the Kennedy Center and was made into an ABC Family Channel movie. It’s on the reading list of many middle schools in the Salt Lake City area. Auditions will be held in mid-April. The cast will include teens and adults. All actors will be paid an honorarium. The performance will be in late May.

Summer/Fall’09: A playwriting contest for middle school and high school students. Students are asked to submit a ten minute play on any one of the Ten Commandments. Submission deadline will be late September. The entries will be read by a panel of professors, teachers and theater artists. Three runner-up plays will be given rehearsed readings. The winner will receive a full production and a cash prize of $100. The four plays will make up an evening of theater. Performance will be in late autumn.

We will be giving birth to this exciting new theater project slowly, and on a small scale. We anticipate doing our first full-length production in the spring of 2010.
We welcome any and all who would like to be involved!
